preface

Climate change caused by human activities has been identified as one of the biggest challenges facing the world and will continue to affect business and citizens in the coming decades. Climate change has an impact on both human and natural systems, and may have a significant impact on resource availability, economic activities and human well-being. We need to make an effective and gradual response to the urgent threat of climate change on the basis of the best scientific knowledge available. The quantification of product carbon footprint is a tool that converts scientific knowledge into help to address climate change. Greenhouse gases can be emitted and removed throughout the life cycle of products, including the acquisition, design, production, transportation / delivery, use and end-of-life treatment of raw materials. Quantifying the carbon footprint (CFP) of a product will help understand and take action to increase the removal of greenhouse gases and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases throughout the life cycle of the product.

The product carbon footprint calculation only includes the greenhouse gas part of a full life cycle assessment (LCA). Based on LCA's research method, a variety of carbon footprint assessment guidelines and requirements have been established internationally for product carbon footprint certification. At present, there are three widely used carbon footprint assessment standards: ① PAS 2050:2011 specification for assessment of greenhouse gas emissions of goods and services during their life cycles, which is jointly issued by BSI, Carbon Trust and Defra, It is the earliest standard with specific calculation method in the world, and is also the most widely used product carbon footprint evaluation standard at present; ② Greenhouse gas accounting system: product life cycle accounting and reporting standard, which is a product and supply chain standard issued by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for sustainable development (WBCSD); ③ ISO 14067:2018 greenhouse gases - carbon footprint of products - quantitative requirements and guidelines. This standard is prepared and issued by the international organization for Standardization (ISO) with PAS 2050 as the seed document. The purpose of product carbon footprint accounting standards is to establish a consistent and internationally recognized method for assessing product carbon footprint.
